Some salt spreaders marketed in the UK have been designed for North American or Scandinavian markets where salt is not used, due to their winter temperatures being considerably lower than those in the UK. Road salt is only effective when the temperature does not fall below -8 degrees celsius - below that and the salt does not melt the ice. When the temperature does fall that low, the USA and Scandinavia use grit, which doesn't melt the snow and ice, but does provide better purchase for tyres. The Logic PDS Salt Spreader is a spreader with its own on-board engine, used to spread road salt in winter conditions. Employing a similar technology to highway sized salt spreaders, the PDS is useful for any organisation needing to keep roadways, pathways, car parks etc free from slipping hazards in the colder months. It is a powered drive unit (5.5hp Honda engine) and will hold 585 litres (approx. 3/4 tonne) of salt, providing useful capacity. The PDS range is capable of spreading all types of material including wet rock salt, grit and sand. A unique agitation system and conveyor floor ensures wet or dry material can be spread effectively and accurately by a spinning disc. The unit is fully road legal, including suspension and over-run brakes allowing the PDS to be towed at national speed limits between jobs, making the PDS ideal for contractors who service a number of different sites. A deck-mounted version can be secured onto a trailer or a pick-up, turning any suitable vehicle into a salt-spreading asset. It is very quick to deploy at the first signs of bad weather and for winter gritting jobs it dramatically reduces the time needed to complete the task, when compared to the manual alternative of spreading salt or grit using shovels. Winter Maintenance applications The PDS range can allow equipment to get access to areas when conditions are slippery. The PDS provides an ideal way of gritting estate roads ‘on demand’ and the de-mount version allows the unit to be mounted in a suitable pick-up, truck or trailer. The unit can cast the salt to the left or right meaning that it can spread salt underneath parked cars. Product features The PDS has application rates of between 5 - 80 grams/sq metre. Spreading widths vary between 1.5 - 14 metres (requires changing drive belt to high ratio pulley). The unit has remote control which allows the operator to switch the unit on whilst in motion. It is built to be robust and long-lasting, even taking into account the corrosive nature of road salt which can cause other salt spreaders to stop working.
